First, a little background. I live in a townhouse, and I've recently been trying to purge a lot of junk, and re-organize my garage. I built a new workbench and put up a lot of shelving. One of the things I dug out is my 1981 XR 80. I bought it when I started racing in 1990 to use as a pit bike. It was pretty ratty and had a flat in the rear, but it started so I gave the lady $75 for it. Pulled the tube on the rear with the idea of patching it and found the valve stem base was ripped. I cut a donut out of an old tube and rubber cemented it around the valve stem. It was still holding in 2003...the last time I rode it.This is a bike that not only was used as a pit bike, but spent hours on single track in the woods, dirt tracking in the sand pits, and many wheelie contests and a few jumping contests. All with adults in the 150-190 lb range. Because of it's age, it had a built in rev limiter. Hold it wide open, and it would hit a point, even in first or second, where it just wouldn't pull any more revs. It got an oil change once a year, and has been run with only the mesh screen in the airbox since about 1992 when the last of the air filter rotted away. It did not have an easy life.
Back to the present... I pulled it out, and was debating if I should keep it. I don't really have room for it, and it's been sitting in that corner with half a tank of gas for at least 6 years.I must have put Sta-bil in the tank because there was still something in the tank that smelled kinda like gas. I decided to turn on the petcock and kick it...nothing. Just for ha ha's I put it in second, gave it a shove and let the clutch out. It started right up, and dropped into a steady idle. Unbelievable. I won't be getting rid of it. Time to teach another generation how to ride on it. These things never die.

Let's pretend for a moment that Valentino Rossi does leave MotoGP to race in Formula One for Ferrari. How long do you think it will take before he starts having good results?

Back in the early 60s, when cars, bikes and racing were simpler, John Surtees gave up bikes for Formula One. In 1960, he took second place in his second race, at the British Grand Prix and started from the pole in Portugal, while racing for Lotus. After seasons with Cooper and Reg Parnell (a private entrant), he joined Ferrari in 1963 and won the World Driver's Championship in 1964.

How will home-town hero Rossi do? Will he follow Surtees's footsteps and be competitive from day one? Will he be more like Mike "The Bike" Hailwood and have some decent results but no wins and not much to brag about? Or will he just fizzle?

Given the specialization of Formula One these days, and that the current drivers have been racing on four wheels since single-digit ages, I suspect Rossi will be more of a publicity stunt than a serious driver.

What say you?

MSMA's reaction to the arbitrary rules changes in WSBK. More specifically, the MSMA's reaction to the 1000cc formula and the elimination of the kits part rule--a move designed to require the manufacturers to run factory teams in WSBK, even though it makes no sense to have factory teams in a production series.

All relevant to today's troubles in the world of GP, WSBK, and national superbike series.

it's that time of year again. let's throw out what we know about openings and rumoured moves. Beginning with the factory teams.

WSBK:

Yamaha Italia: Spies signed for 2011. Sykes not confirmed, although Meregalli says he wants him.

Ten Kate: Rea and Kiyo almost certain, but biggest rumour is JT's return.

Brux Suzuki: Neukirchner locked in, but word is that Kagayama may be headed to BSB leaving an opening for? Vermin

Stiggy: Rumoured switch to Yamaha from Honda, but no announcement on Haslam or Hopper as yet.

Aprilia: Rumours of a big offer to Colin Edwards. Max is proably set.

Xerox Ducati: Did I really read that Haga may retire? Nah. Febreze has earned another season, for sure.

Paul Bird Kawasaki: Look set to retain the factory Kawasaki title *snicker*, but will Japan insist on Tamada or allow Birdy to ship him out. If so, might be a landing for someone like Shakey Byrne or Vermin. I can't imagine they'd ditch Parkes, but it's Kwack, so things don't always make sense.

BMW: Neither Corser nor Xaus confirmed, and with Neukirchner locked up for another season, they may very well go with the veterans until 2011. Certainly Troy Corser has done a good job developing the bike.

It's that time of year again. Mid-August is when the signings and rumours begin to ramp up for next year's season. So here goes again!

Some news that has already passed:

1. Simoncelli signed with Gresini

2. Aspar is coming up to MotoGP, replacing the defunct Francisco Hernando team

3. Rossi is signed with Yamaha for next season.
