First, NASCAR has set a date of 2010 for the Nationwide Series' COT

CONCORD, N.C. – NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said Monday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway that the Nationwide Series car of tomorrow would not be rolled out until 2010, setting a firm introduction of the new car for the first time.

Looks like NASCAR learned from their blunder with the Sprint Cup Series COT with this. It was stupid of NASCAR to have the teams build two different cars for one season. Hopefully, this won't hurt the smaller Nationwide teams too badly.

This COT looks better than the Sprint Cup COT, keeping the spoiler for the Nationwide Series, but in a different shape.

Next, Goodyear may have to make different tires for the Nationwider Series in 2010.

CONCORD, N.C. – Goodyear could be forced to build different tires for NASCAR’s Sprint Cup and Nationwide series in 2010 when the Nationwide car of tomorrow is rolled out, a top official from the sanctioning body says.

Some in the Nationwide Series have asked for different tires than the Cup series to help differentiate the series and make sure Cup drivers don’t simply use the Nationwide Series as a test bed.

Looks like NASCAR is going to try to limit the Cup drivers from running in the Nationwide Series but making the cars very different in how they drive, through both the tires and the car. Maybe the Cup drivers will run fewer races in the Nationwide Series in 2010 and on, instead of doing the whole season like what happens now.

And finally, NASCAR won't make any rule changes to the COT for next year. Smart move on NASCAR's part, since teams that have made significant gains on the COT would have to spend thousands, if not millions, more on redeveloping the car since their current notes and setups would basically be junk. Teams are starting to figure the COT out now.

Read and discuss.

Chrysler's imminent demise - how will it affect NASCAR?
By Peter M. De Lorenzo
snip...

The writing is on the wall for Chrysler's racing programs despite the pronouncements to the contrary from management types at the company. I expect we'll hear the words (or something like them) "we're in it for the long haul," or "we plan on being a force in 2009," or "reports of our demise are greatly exaggerated" - right up until the day it's announced that Chrysler is sold, merged or parted out to one (or more) of its various suitors.

Taken from Jayski:

"Sprint Cup Racing on Fox concluded its 2008 campaign with a 4.2/10 for the race from Dover yesterday to rank as the top-rated event for the weekend. Last year's race which was rained-out and rescheduled on a Monday afternoon posted a 2.2/7 and was not included in the 2007 season average. For the 2008 season, Sprint Cup racing averaged a 5.2/11 in the meters for 13 races, flat with last year's average for just 12 races.(Fox)(6-2-200"

Now, given the Jr pull-through this year, it seems to me that flat ratings compared to last year (which were way down from previous years) actually means NASCAR is still bleeding fans. It will be interesting to see how things go since the top 5 or so in the chase seem pretty well set and given the less than titillating combination of CoT and upcoming tracks between now and, say the Brickyard. Maybe more pressure on NASCAR to do something about the racing???
