Ever since I saw Steve McQueen going airborne on the streets of San Fran in his Highland Green '68 Mustang GT 390 in Bullitt, I've lusted after this classic Ford. Who hasn't? But the fact is that a '68 Mustang has all the reliability of a car built 39 years ago.
So my SEMA award for the "Best Brand New Classic" goes to Ford and its work with a host of Mustang specialists to make available a brand-new 2008 version of the iconic Sixties Mustang Fastback.
California-based Dynacorn International makes it all possible by building a complete, new replacement bodyshell – it's actually a replica of a '67, but who's counting? Then add Ford's latest 347 Boss crate motor, which looks a lot like the old 289 V8 used in 1967, and mate it to a Tremec five-speed and you have one great-driving pony.
The beauty of the project is that pretty much every component, every nut, bolt and piece of trim is being re-created these days. Which made the stunning silvery-blue car on the Ford SEMA stand, built by Michigan-based Classic Design Concepts, pretty much 100 percent authentic, and 100 percent all-new.

As for my pick of "Best Sunday Morning Driver for the Starbucks Run," how about the crazy little Cirbin V13R that was making its debut at SEMA. Three wheels, 125 horsepower Harley-Davidson V-twin driving the rear wheel and just over 1000 pounds in weight. That sounds like more fun than a night partying with Lindsay Lohan.
It's being built up in Montreal and when it goes on sale next spring should sticker for around $50-grand. With zero-to-60 acceleration in under five seconds – it uses the 125-hp motor from the Harley V-rod – and go kart handling, what's not to love? Maybe you could even sprinkle on a few of your own Swarovski crystals.
