SPEED: What is the most dangerous towing call you’ve ever been on?
Gratzianna: “I’ve had experiences with gasoline tankers that scared me a bit. One that really rattled my cage was 8,000 gallons of gasoline that ruptured the tank and was running down the sidewalk and into the sewers. It was pretty intimidating by itself to be standing ankle-deep in gasoline with no control over it. But what made it very scary was the fact it was July 3 and people were setting off bottle rockets and fireworks while I was standing in a pool of gasoline.
“I’ve also had some situations with gasoline tankers that reignited after they crashed and burned and then lit back up. That will make you change your underwear every time.
“I’ve had a few bad incidents on the highway, such as when a forklift went through my arm and I got my eye knocked out. Those don’t really scare me – it’s the potential disaster situations – the ‘what-ifs,’ the potential disasters, that really rattle me.”
SPEED: What is the messiest towing call you’ve ever handled?
Gratzianna: “A load of Elmer’s Glue overturned on the road and by the time I finished with the truck, went home and took off my jeans, they were so hardened that they stood up like I was still wearing them. When I took them off, it pulled the hair off my legs like a waxing job.
“A truck that
services port-a-potties rolled over in a forest reserve and split the tank, and that was just plain gross. I had to get close enough to hook up to the truck and the smell was indescribable.
“One call that surprised me involved a flatbed truck cows’ leather hides on it. The tower was hauling from the meat plant, where they process the animals for their meat, and was taking the hides to the next stage. He had them in an open truck – a flatbed – and it was terribly foul-smelling. After I smelled the stench, I asked him what the hell he was hauling. Curiosity got the best of me and I took a peek. Mistake.”
