When Jason Sides first saw Ohsweken Speedway last season, it reminded him a lot of the movie “Field of Dream,” as the race track sit directly behind track owner/promoter Glenn Styres house. The track is the product of many years of hard work and Styres love for racing, especially sprint car racing. For many years, a dream of his was to have the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series visit the high-banked 3/8-mile in his backyard, which happened for the first time last season, with Sides winning the series debut at Ohsweken.

This season Sides and the rest of the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series will have two chances to compete at Ohsweken, as the series takes to the track on Tuesday, July 22 and Wednesday, July 23 for two full nights of racing. The cameras from SPEED will also be on-hand to capture all of the action.

“Turns one and two are right off the back of his (Styres) house,” noted Sides. “He could stand on his porch and watch the race. It’s pretty neat to see that. Everyone pitches in up there to help out at the track and that makes it really good for us.”

Prior to the World of Outlaws event at the track last season, countless improvements were made to Ohsweken Speedway to accommodate the series, including adding thousands of addition seats which sold out just as quickly as they were installed. Even more improvements have been made this season, as Styres continues to transform the facility into one of the premier dirt tracks in Canada, which has Sides and his fellow World of Outlaws drivers excited to return to the always racy track.

“It’s
a good track,” said the 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner. “The promoter does a great job up there, taking care of all of the teams. The fans all come out early and are excited to see us. That makes it good for everybody, and I am definitely looking forward to going back there.”

When Sides won last season at Ohsweken, it was the World of Outlaws first trip to Canada since 1981. He joined three-time series champion Sammy Swindell, a fellow Tennessee native as the only series winners north of the border. Since then, 20-time series champion Steve Kinser, along with two-time defending series title winner Donny Schatz have added win in Canada, as they both won at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton last August.

“It’s a good accomplishment to have my name on that list,” said Sides, who drives the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. “It would be good to go back there and repeat, and if we can’t do that, it would be good to run in the Top-Three. We’ll see how the qualifying goes and go on from there.”

Sides, who is one of several World of Outlaws drivers that makes an annual trip to Australia in the off-season to race, enjoys competing in front of international fans who are very passionate about sprint car racing and only get to see the best drivers in the world a couple of times each year. Last season at Ohsweken, the fans began lining up to get tickets in the early afternoon and were still filing through the gates as the heat races were taking place. By the time the A-Feature rolled around, the largest crowd in the history of the track was assembled.
