Wheldon could stay with Ganassi next year, but a pay cut is a possibility. (LAT Photo) ยป More Photos

*** If the IRL is going to be smart enough to add optional tires, it's a no-brainer to also go with another Champ Car novelty -- standing starts. They proved to be safe, sane and exciting in 2007 on road courses and street circuits. No crashes in the first turn of the first lap at Portland, Toronto and Cleveland, which always promoted carnage with flying starts.

*** If Wheldon stays with Ganassi, it probably won't be for $2.8 million per year.

*** Robert Clarke, the former president of Honda Performance Development, is now acting as an agent/advisor and his first client? That would be Tony Kanaan. Hmmm, wonder if Honda had anything to do with keeping T.K. at AGR?

*** No Sonoma this week for Paul Tracy and Derrick Walker as Tony George's
third car but Vision Racing is working on a deal to run P.T. in the final races at Detroit and Chicago.

*** Rafa Matos could win the Atlantic and Indy Lights titles in back-to-back seasons and still not get a sniff of an IndyCar ride unless he hits the lottery.

*** If A.J. Allmendinger doesn't fit into NASCAR's Red Bull plans after this season, sure hope somebody in the IRL is smart enough to snap him up. He's talented, good with the media, great with the fans and belongs in open wheel.

*** Alex Lloyd, Jay Howard and Wade Cunningham, the past three Indy Lights champions, all share one thing: they're spectators at IRL races.

*** Kentucky Speedway is expected to announce next year's IRL race is 90 percent sold out.
