Broadcasters typically report the who, what, where, and how of an event. That simple formula isn’t enough for ALMS fans or the hardworking folks at SPEED TV.
They want to know why something happened or, better yet, is about to happen. That search for the why, may itself be why, in a time of shifting broadcast trends, the ALMS television audience continues to grow. The SPEED television announcers and the behind the scenes team from Wheeler TV producing the ALMS broadcasts is certainly part of the success. Greg Creamer, the smooth SPEED play-by-play announcer has a deep knowledge of and passion for motorsports.
Creamer knows the history, people, cars, and tracks and neatly weaves it all into the race broadcasts, calling on his color commentator and pit reporters to help tell the story as the race unfolds. SPEED color commentator Calvin Fish, also draws from his own racing experience and close ties to the teams, drivers and racing insiders to provide insights, strategic
views, and forecast what may happen next. Meanwhile, SPEED pit reporters Brian Till and Jamie Howe feed information from the pits, getting the words and the expressions from drivers, team managers and technical experts.
That effort combined with a close knit, veteran team of producers, directors, cameramen and technical support lets SPEED provide viewers with both the big picture and the behind the scene bits that are critical pieces of the puzzle. With years of experience and a passion for motorsports, the SPEED team doesn’t cover a race so much as they “feel” the race, sensing problems and opportunities, anticipating strategic moves and focusing their cameras and announcers to capture it all for their audience.
Of course, it helps to have great races to cover, and the exciting battles to the final lap in nearly every ALMS event have helped keep fans watching. Beginning here at Mosport, Speedtv.com will carry streaming video of ALMS qualifying and hope to make that a regular feature for the entire ALMS schedule in 2009
Why?
Because ALMS fans want it, that’s why.
