SPRINT CUP Sprint Nextel confirmed Sunday that it is mulling over the possibility of changing the name of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series in 2008. "As we have stated before, Sprint Nextel is actively researching the best action regarding the name of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series," said a Sprint Nextel public relations representative Sunday. "The name will remain NASCAR Nextel Cup Series for the duration of the 2007. Our hope is to have more information by late summer regarding our plans for changing or not changing the name in 2008." NASCAR officials had no comment on the possibility of a name change for its top series.
WILL HE OR WON'T HE? The most hotly speculated topic in Nextel Cup continues to be the future of Mark Martin, who was supposed to run just 20 of 36 points races this season. But in the season's first three races Martin unexpectedly has scored three consecutive top-five finishes in his Ginn Racing Chevrolet, including a fifth in Sunday's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And that has the Batesville, Ark., native hedging his bets about the future. "This was an awful good car today...I was out there having fun," said Martin, who for the second week in a row leads the Nextel Cup points standings. "I don't want this to get away as far as having a great team and a great opportunity. We made this deal, they made the deal and (team owner) Bobby Ginn told me a deal was a
Asked point-blank if his plans might change, Martin was evasive. "Let's just worry about that later," he said. "I was happy with the run; I'm happy with the team and happy with what I laid out. We don't need to be talking about that right now."
SWEATING IT OUT Matt Kenseth, the 2003 Nextel Cup Series Champion, didn't have a great car to start the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sunday and he didn't have crew chief Robbie Reiser, still serving a four-race suspension dating back to Daytona. But Kenseth and his Roush Fenway Racing crew made lemonade out of a potential lemon, scoring a fine fourth-place finish after winning two weeks ago in California.
"Overall, it ended up being a great day, but it was really a struggle," said Kenseth. "The finish was spectacular, the day certainly wasn't. We didn't have a very good handling car, really, all day, and kind of got lost at the beginning of the race and didn't know what to adjust. … We were able to make a lot of different adjustments during pit stops because we had a lot of pit stops. From hard work and not giving up by the guys we were able to salvage a good finish out of a not-so-good day."
