JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Although far from the newest or fanciest track on the circuit, Bristol Motor Speedway is near and dear to the hearts of drivers, including Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who swept the Cup and Busch races here in August 2004. "It's way up there," Earnhardt said when asked where his sweep here ranked in his career achievements. "What's cool about winning here is the history of the track. … It's just an awesome track. There are tracks on the circuit that are important to me and those are the Daytonas, the Atlantas, the Charlottes, the Bristols, the ones that have been there for years and years and years. … It's still that high-banked half-mile short track where anything can happen. When you win a race (here) you feel like you have successfully navigated a minefield. It's half elation and excitement and the other half's relief."

JARRETT STAYING PUT Dale Jarrett said Friday that his tentative plan is to remain with Robert Yates Racing through the end of the 2008 season and then retire. "Things are pretty good that I'll be where I'm at through that time," Jarrett said Friday during a rain delay at Bristol Motor Speedway. "I don't want to overstay my welcome here … trying to extend any longer than that would be taking a chance as far as my competitive spirit and my body holding up." Jarrett said he was unlikely he would follow the lead of Bill Elliott and Terry Labonte and driver part-time after stepping away from his full-time ride.

BURTON BACKS UP HARVICK Never one to shy away from controversy, Kevin Harvick said the best thing about having Jeff Burton as a teammate at Richard Childress Racing is that Burton reinforced Harvick's perceptions about the team's weaknesses. "I think the biggest thing Jeff did was when he came in, he backed up everything we'd been griping about for three years," Harvick said Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway. "Jeff is very good at putting it to the people how it could be better and how it could benefit everybody and do it politically correct."

MARTIN MELLOW IN '06 Mark Martin said Friday that he's having a great time in his final NASCAR Nextel Cup season. "This is the way I want to finish off my Nextel Cup racing – near the top of my game," Martin said. I don't feel as much pressure this year as I felt last year because I tried so hard to finish it off at the top of my game and didn't realize that something was gonna happen that would bring me back another year. I kind of went into this year with
no pressure and thinking that it will either be good or it won't. I can't change the outcome of it, so I'm not stressing about it nearly as much as I did last year and I'm actually getting great results – maybe even better results, which would really be a dream, come true. This is probably the time of my life. I'm sure a few years down the road I'll look back and say that 2006 was the time of my life and that these are the good old days. I just don't realize it right now."

CAR OF TOMORROW TEST Four teams are expected to test NASCAR's "Car of Tomorrow" at Bristol on Monday, weather permitting.

HEALTH WATCH The cold, gray weather at Bristol, coming on the heels of a cold, gray weekend in Atlanta the week before, found several drivers under the weather, including Jimmie Johnson and Reed Sorenson. Asked how he would spend his rain delay, Sorenson said, "I'm not feeling too hot, so I might go do nothing, take some medicine and try to feel a little bit better. I might go play my Bristol video game. At least that way I get in some practice laps."

ON THE REBOUND Kasey Kahne, who is second in the Nextel Cup points following his victory last week, said his confidence is way up this year, compared to his disastrous sophomore campaign of 2005. "It's a lot higher than it was last year," said the third-year Evernham Motorsports driver. "It's definitely a lot higher. We haven't been tearing up race cars. We've been bringing them back in one piece. We can actually make adjustments during the race and make the car
better. Last year, there was no chance of that."

ON THE BIG SCREEN Disney.Pixar's new computer-animated feature "CARS" will stage its world premiere May 26th at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Paul Newman, Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and others from the voice cast of the film will be joined by a host of stars from the racing world and an estimated 30,000 fans.

LEGAL BRIEFS According to report at racing website www.scenedaily.com, Hendrick Motorsports maintains that if it is found liable for the deaths of 10 people in the crash of a team airplane that that liability should be transferred to air traffic controllers. The team plane crashed in October 2004 near Martinsville, Va. The widows of three men on the plane have sued the team, alleging negligence. Linda Turner, widow of former team manager Jeff Turner, has also sued the Federal Aviation Administration.
