Monster Energy Kawasaki's James Stewart will undergo surgery this week to repair his injured knee. Stewart is hopeful he can return to the team in time for the AMA Motocross Championship season opener on May 25 at Glen Helen Raceway Park.

"Going in for this surgery is the right thing to do," said Stewart. "I want to be out there racing but I owe it to Kawasaki and my fans to be able to be at my best. I'm going to start my rehab right away and work with Aldon (Baker) to be as ready as I can for the outdoor season."

Stewart
injured his knee at his home track in December while riding in preparation for the 2008 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM Championship.

"Obviously we want James to be at 100 percent,' said Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Manager Mike Fisher. "We know the surgery is the best thing for James and we are looking forward to him getting back on the bike and challenging for the AMA Motocross title."

While riding injured this season, Stewart scored his 25th career win at Chase Field and was tied for the championship lead after two events.
