Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City , Md. , led teammate Randy Pobst, of Gainesville , Ga. , in practice at Miller Motorsports Park to keep Mazda on top for Round Two of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship, part of the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix. Pierre Kleinubing, of Coconut Creek , Fla. , was third fastest on the day.

Altenburg led the late stages of the afternoon practice session in his No. 72 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6, but set his quickest lap, a 3:10.088 (84.958 mph), just before the checkered flag came out to end SCCA SPEED Touring Car practice for the day at the 4.486-mile, 24-turn road course.

"We were here a month ago testing, so we had plenty of time to figure out what we wanted to do," Altenburg said. "When you do that, you start out fast and every one else is catching up. The work this team has done analyzing the data and shock graphs, the drivability of the engine and the brakes; this car is on rails. This is the best handling car that we've ever had. It's going to take awhile for everyone to catch up, but for now we're the lucky ones."

Altenburg 's Tri-Point Motorsports teammate Pobst was quickest in the morning session, but ended the day second fastest in his No. 73 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6 with a time of 3:10.240 (84.890 mph).

Reigning SCCA SPEED Touring Car Champion Pierre Kleinubing drove his No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura TSX to third on the practice sheets. Kleinubing found nearly two seconds in the afternoon session to post a 3:10.577 (84.740 mph).

Driving the No. 38 BimmerWorld BMW 325i, Seth Thomas, of Cumming , Ga. , dropped a spot in the afternoon session to finish fourth-quick with a time of 3:10.587 (84.736 mph).

The third Tri-Point Motorsports entry of Roberto Santos completed the top five. Competing in his first SCCA SPEED World Challenge event, Santos entered a time of 3:11.064 (84.524 mph) in his No. 74 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6.

Qualifying for Round Two of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship will take place Friday, May 18, at 11:55 a.m. (MDT). The 13-lap race is scheduled for Saturday, May 19, at 2:10 p.m. (MDT).
