Sebastien Loeb did everything right in Rally Ireland, taking a crucial step towards a fourth straight World Rally Championship title after posting a dominant win.
The Citroen star will now enter the Rally Great Britain six points in front of title rival Marcus Gronholm, who crashed out of the event on the opening loop of stages on Friday – quite a feat for the Frenchman, who trailed the Finn for the majority of the season so far.
"The rally was really, really difficult, but we managed to finish it," the Frenchman said. "Ten points more for the championship is really important. That could change a lot of things for the championship. For sure this rally was one of the most difficult we've ever done, because it was very muddy, but the car was really good. I had a really good feeling and I was not pushing so hard, just driving through with no risks."
Dani Sordo in the second Citroen completed a 1-2 for the French mark, while Ford privateer Jari Latvala completed the
podium. The consolation for Gronholm's Ford team was securing its second straight manufacturer's championship, courtesy of a fourth-place result for works driver Mikko Hirvonen. 2003 champion Petter Solberg rounded out the top-five for Subaru.
