Juan Pablo Montoya, an internationally known racer and former champion in the CART Series hit the ARCA RE/MAX Series last season to gain experience prior to his jump to NASCAR. Montoya raced two ARCA races including the season ending race at Iowa Speedway. After three races into the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series season, Montoya captured his first victory at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course in Mexico City.
If there were ever a perfect opportunity to spotlight the ARCA RE/MAX Series and their connection to the next superstars of stock car racing this past weekend would be that opportunity. While Roush Fenway Racing took home the victory in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, Craftsman Truck Series and the Nextel Cup Series
Each win was done in a Ford and with Roush-Yates engines. But an important connection that can't be overlooked is the fact that three of the four winning drivers from the weekend's events have also won in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.
Erik Darnell, a development driver from the Roush Fenway Racing stable won the ARCA 200 at Michigan last Friday. Darnell joins Chad McCumbee as the only two-time winners in ARCA this season. Darrell also won a Craftsman Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway earlier in the season, one day after finishing second in an ARCA race.
"What ARCA is today with all the NASCAR affiliated teams out there, it's become very competitive. Not just the Cup affiliated teams because the stand-alone ARCA teams are running very strong as well," said Darnell regarding his opinion on ARCA. "There's a lot of competition out there and it helps someone like myself get ready to move up the ranks to be able to compete at a higher level."
