As Good as Ever: M. Schumacher Wins International Challenge of Stars

After dominating the first heat, Michael Schumacher finished a discreet sixth in the second race of the day to emerge on top on aggregate points in the International Challenge of Stars go-kart race promoted by his former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa in Florianopolis, Brazil.

The seven-time world champion was the shiniest star in an event that assembled an impressive number of Brazil's racing royalty, from F1 regulars like Rubens Barrichello and Nelson Piquet Jr. to IndyCar standouts such as Tony Kanaan and Vitor Meira. Veterans like Gil de Ferran and Roberto Moreno and even MotoGP race winner Alex Barros were also part of the lineup.

Fourth on the grid led by Piquet Jr. on the first heat, Schuey jumped to second at the start, then benefited from a mistake by leader Lucas di Grassi on the following lap to get to the front. Then, the fierce fight behind him helped the German to take an authoritative 5.6-sec win over Piquet in the morning race, which had former F1 driver Luciano Burti, currently a star in Brazil's Stock Car V8 championship, completing the podium.

"Sure it feels great, winning is better than losing, but it wasn't exactly a great win [since] the karts fighting behind made it easier for me," Schumacher said.

The top-eight finishers were reversed for the afternoon race's grid, putting another Stock Car regular, Thiago Camilo, on pole ahead of host Massa, seventh in the morning. In typical Schumacher fashion, the German waited for rivals in front to falter to run as high as second behind di Grassi, but ended up finishing sixth after his kart was hit by Camilo in an overly optimistic move.

Di Grassi, the 2007 GP2 Series runner-up, won the afternoon event ahead of Burti and Massa, with Barrichello and Stock Car's Marcos Gomes completing the top-five. The points system, which mimicked Stock Car's, gave Schumacher the title ahead of Burti and di Grassi.
