F1: Piquet Jr. Mustn’t Bow to Teammate, Says Sr.

If Fernando Alonso does end up at Renault next year, he can expect a fight from his teammate according to three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet, who provided yet another hint that his son Nelson Jr. will be one of the French team's racers in 2008.

Speaking to Brazil's A Tribuna newspaper, Piquet Sr. deemed his son "extremely quick" and ready to "stun" the F1 world with his speed.

"It's time for Nelsinho to show how good he is," the former Brabham, Williams, Lotus and Benetton driver said. "He has to walk [into F1] thinking that whoever's on the other side of the [Renault] pits will be outpaced. There's no way around it, you're either that good or not."

Piquet Sr. went as far as speculating what could happen on next year's Melbourne
season opener.

"If Nelsinho races at Renault with Fernando and is able to beat him in their first qualifying session together, it would be a good start, a way to start demoralizing [Alonso]."

Ironically, Alonso's dissatisfaction with a rookie teammate's speed – Lewis Hamilton, who battled for top GP2 honors with none other than Piquet Jr. in '06 – was at the heart of the controversy that fueled the "Stepneygate" spy saga and concluded with the Spaniard leaving McLaren after a single season.
