Toyota has announced Kamui Kobayashi as their third driver for 2008, replacing Frenchman Franck Montagny.
Kobayashi, 21, spent the '07 season in the Formula 3 Euro Series, where he also raced in '05 and '06, and finished fourth in points with one win. He is expected to land a full-time GP2 ride to go together with his Formula 1 testing duties next year.
"This is a great challenge for me and I am very excited about becoming a Formula 1 driver," he said. "This is a fantastic opportunity for me. My first tests for the team last winter went well but I still have things to learn about F1 and
"I am sure I will learn a lot about Formula 1 cars and hopefully this will help me in my future career, but for now I am focused on helping the team move forward."
Kobayashi will begin testing the Toyota F1 car officially next week at Jerez.
