F1: Raikkonen On Pole; Hamilton Crashes Hard

Winner of the last two Grands Prix, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen carried his momentum into the qualifying session for the European GP, taking only his second pole position of the 2007 season, in a session marked by a serious accident involving championship points leader and rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton.

In the final segment of knockout qualifying, Hamilton's McLaren suffered a right-front suspension failure - triggered, according to the team, by a problem in the mounting of the wheel - in the middle of the high-speed Schumacher-S turn. The Briton's car hit the tire barriers head-on, in a manner reminiscent of Michael Schumacher's own crash in 1999 at Silverstone, but Hamilton managed to pull himself out of the cockpit and sit outside the car.

The rookie was unable to stand on his own, however, and was immediately taken to the circuit's medical center. A 30-minute delay ensued as the barriers needed to be repaired. Soon came word that Hamilton was conscious and had suffered no fractures, but his status for tomorrow's race remains unknown.

The session finally resumed with 5:13 left on the clock, forcing drivers to scramble for track space as time for a single flying lap attempt remained.

Massa was the first of the frontrunners to card his, a 1:31.778 that was then beaten by teammate Raikkonen by 0.3sec. Fernando Alonso in the second McLaren figured to be the favorite to take pole, posting the quickest times in sectors 1 and 3, but a mistake in sector 2 relegated the Spaniard to the outside front row, just 0.037 ahead of Massa.

In Hamilton's absence, Nick Heidfeld "inherited" fourth place, just 0.1sec behind Alonso, while his BMW teammate Robert Kubica rounded out the top-five.

Mark Webber gave Red Bull its best qualifying performance of the year by taking P6, ahead of Heikki Kovalainen's Renault. The Toyotas of Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher completed the group of Q3 qualifiers, while Hamilton, if cleared by the doctors, will have to start from P10.

The Williams duo of Nico Rosberg and Alex Wurz took positions 11 and 12, in front of Giancarlo Fisichella in the second Renault. Honda's Rubens Barrichello was 14th, narrowly beating the Super Aguris of Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato, who again managed to stay ahead
of one works Honda, Jenson Button's in this case. The Briton was unable to progress beyond Q1 and will start 17th.

The Toro Rossos of Scott Speed and Vitantonio Liuzzi came next, edging David Coulthard in the second Red Bull. The Spykers of Adrian Sutil and Marcus Winkelhock hold the last row after a dismal performance, with Sutil lapping 1.4sec slower than DC ahead of him.
It looked ugly, but Hamilton claims to be "absolutely fine". (LAT Photo) » More Photos
