Despite Honda's massive struggles this season, veteran Rubens Barrichello has announced he has extended his contract with the team until the end of '08, shaping up to what could be his final year in the sport.

Winner of nine Grands Prix in his Ferrari days, the 35-year-old Brazilian joined Honda in '06 but has failed to score a podium with the Japanese team ever since, though he did finish seventh in the driver's battle last year with 30 points. Through nine races this season, however, Barrichello remains scoreless.

"I am delighted to confirm that I am staying with Honda for 2008," he stated. "When I came here in 2006, it was always my intention to develop a long-term relationship and help build a strong team together. 2007 has been tough so far but I believe we are heading in the right direction again.

"In addition to the great team we have already, there are some good new people coming on
board and I have confidence that we will make progress now.

"[Teammate] Jenson [Button] and I have a great relationship together as team-mates and stability will be key as we look forward to the challenge of 2008. For now though, we have eight races remaining and that is where our focus lies."

Barrichello's permanence in the sport makes him poised to overtake Riccardo Patrese as the driver with most starts in F1 history. The Brazilian is currently 15 races away from the Italian's record of 256 GPs.
