Ferrari's opening of a criminal enquiry against former Chief Mechanic Nigel Stepney (click here for story) is linked to a possible sabotage of the team's fuel ahead of last month's Monaco Grand Prix, according to Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

In the story, the newspaper reveals that a "mysterious powder" was found on the gas tanks of Felipe Massa's and Kimi Raikkonen's cars on May 21, six days before the Monaco race. Stepney, who was the on-track chief mechanic during Ross Brawn's tenure as the Scuderia's technical director, has taken over the responsibility for "Team Performance Development" this season – a factory position.

"The fact that we have taken the action of seeking the Modena district attorney's office means we have found
something illegitimate," team boss Jean Todt admitted to the Gazzetta. "As for whether it was sabotaging or not, I cannot comment at this moment."

Todt also outlined that Stepney remains formally tied to the team. The Brit engineer remains unavailable for comment.

The Monaco GP marked a shift in the 2007 season balance of power, triggering a series of three McLaren wins after Massa had won the two previous races.
