Heikki Kovalainen followed up his fourth place at Montreal with a strong run to sixth place in qualifying at Indy – his best performance so far.

The Renault rookie has been under pressure to get results all season. After the frustrations of an engine failure and two crashes on Friday, in Montreal he had a relatively smooth two days, and outpaced teammate Giancarlo Fisichella throughout qualifying. Heikki was new to both the Montreal and Indy tracks.

"I think we are making progress all the time," the Finn told SPEEDtv.com. "And we're heading in the right direction. It's absolutely the right way for us. We've still got some work to do, but we are getting closer and closer.

"I think we can score some good points. We've got to at least keep our position,
and hopefully we can make one or two more if other people have some problems.

"I've been feeling good all weekend, and I haven't had any problems so far. It's been pretty good. Last weekend was difficult, but at the end of the day we got some good points from there, and we'll try to do it again here."

Fisichella will start from 10th, having clearly opted for a heavy fuel load.
