McLaren's Fernando Alonso completed a clean sweep of this Friday's two practice sessions for Sunday's annual United States Grand Prix at Indy, but the biggest news of the afternoon may have been Ferrari's return to form.
The scarlet cars, squarely beaten by their silver rivals at Monaco and Canada, looked weak in Practice 1, led by Alonso over BMW's Nick Heidfeld and teammate Lewis Hamilton. Even BMW rookie Sebastien Vettel, in fourth place, stayed ahead of the Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen (fifth) and Felipe Massa (seventh) in the morning session.
Alas, Practice 2 saw a Scuderia running much closer to the McLarens. Alonso's best lap of 1:12.156 was followed by Hamilton with 1:12.309, while Massa appeared on the third spot, just 0.279 off the Spaniard's pace. Raikkonen was fourth, another 0.152 further back. The Brazilian led for much of the session, before the McLarens switched to the supersoft tires.
Heidfeld stayed competitive in the fifth position, one slot ahead of the promising Red Bull of David Coulthard. Sixth in the morning, Williams' Nico Rosberg dropped one spot in the afternoon, staying ahead of Renault's Heikki Kovalainen on P8, the Finn bouncing back from a disappointing P19 in Practice 1. The Honda duo of Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button rounded out the top-10, just ahead of Vettel's BMW.
American Scott Speed couldn't give the fans much to cheer about. The Californian took 18th, five positions behind Toro Rosso teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi.
Massa believes Ferrari's Indy race pace will be better than last weekend's at Montreal. (LAT Photo) » More Photos
