If the last two races in Monaco and Canada signaled McLaren had got the upper hand in the battle with Ferrari, the United States Grand Prix at Indy may mark the Scuderia's dropping down to third in the Formula 1 pecking order, behind BMW in addition to the silver squad.

In the opening Friday practice this morning at IMS, Monaco winner Fernando Alonso topped the charts with a best lap of 1:11.925, almost half a second quicker than BMW's Nick Heidfeld in the second spot. Canada victor Lewis Hamilton was third in the other McLaren, 0.3sec behind Heidfeld, while Munich's golden teenager, Sebastien Vettel – drafted in the 11th hour to replace Robert Kubica, who must recover from his sensational Montreal crash five days ago – posted the fourth-best lap, just 0.2sec arrears of Lewis.

The historical dominators of the USGP at Indy, Ferrari had a lackluster session, with Kimi Raikkonen rounding out the top-five, more than a full second off Alonso's pace, while teammate Felipe Massa could do no better than seventh, another 0.1sec further back. Williams' Nico Rosberg split the two scarlet machines.

Red Bull's David Coulthard, Honda's Jenson Button and Mark Webber in the second RB3 completed the top-10. Local hero Scott Speed clocked the 15th time for Scuderia Toro Rosso, one position and 0.083 behind teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi. The Californian was also one spot ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella as Renault was arguably the session's biggest disappointment, with Fisi 16th and rookie teammate Heikki Kovalainen in the 19th slot.
