Sebastian Vettel will make his GP debut for BMW at Indianapolis after F1 doctor Gary Hartstein decided that Robert Kubica was not fit enough to compete this weekend.

The decision was made late Thursday afternoon, after Kubica was examined by Hartstein. Although he showed no signs of any injuries, Kubica received a blow to the head in Montreal, and his helmet was scratched.

Vettel has a tough job on his hands, as he has not driven the car since the Friday of the Bahrain GP. Aside from the first three race Fridays, his last test day was in Bahrain in February 27.

Vettel first became the team's Friday test driver at Monza last year, after the departure of Jacques Villeneuve.

"It will be my first race," he explained, "So now the most important thing is to stay on the ground, and do the job at the first tomorrow on Friday, and get the maximum out of the information, and then we see.

"Last year was a different situation, a different car, and the regulations have changed. I had some testing in the pre-season and also with the Friday
testing, so it's a bit different this year."

To the surprise of many, Vettel got the nod over BMW's second tester, Timo Glock. Glock is on great form in GP2, and crucially, he competed in the US GP back in 2004 with Jordan and knows the circuit. He also said to provide better feedback that his less experienced young compatriot, and has even tested more recently than Vettel.

However, Vettel's contract as reserve driver is believed to give him priority, and he is also of course the protégé of Mario Theissen, who has carefully stage managed his career.

Had Vettel been looked over in favor of Glock, it would not have sent out a very positive message about his prospects.
