Ferrari boss Jean Todt admits that the Malaysia result came as a big shock to the team after its strong performance in qualifying.

Pole man Felipe Massa tumbled to third on the first lap, and later went off when he tried to pass Lewis Hamilton. He eventually finished fifth, while Kimi Raikkonen had to settle for third while nursing the engine that suffered a water leak in Melbourne.

"Definitely we are disappointed," said the Frenchman. "After qualifying, one car first and third, we were expecting a better result. As everyone could see, the race got compromised with the start where Felipe did not do the best start we could have expected, and the two McLarens passed our two cars – at least two passed Felipe, one Kimi.

"Then as you could all see an attempt to pass Hamilton Felipe went wide, and he got passed by two cars. Then we could not managed to gain a position, because we know that overtaking is very difficult. We are facing very strong teams, which we
know, and simply today they were better and they deserve the success – that's the thing to say. Next time, next week, we will try to do a better result."

Todt tried to put a damper on any speculation to the effect that McLaren now has the upper hand.

"Two weeks earlier, we were going to be unbeatable. It's not like that. Now it seems that it's completely finished [for us]. It's not completely like that. We made pole first race, pole second race, third position with the other car, so I think we should be able to fight for the first two rows in Bahrain, hopefully do a better start, and be able to be more competitive in the race."
