CHAMP CAR: Laguna Seca Confirms May Date

Champ Car may have declined to name the date for its revived race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca when it was announced last week, but the track has confirmed that the Champ Car World Series will team up with the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series on the weekend of May 16-18 in an event dubbed the "Monterey Festival of Speed." The May date could prove problematic for any CCWS teams considering crossing over for the month of May in Indianapolis.

For the record, in its announcement of its complete 2008 racing schedule, which also includes the 35th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races presented by Toyota on Aug. 15-17, and the American Le Mans Series on Oct. 17-19, Laguna Seca described the second running of its Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix for MotoGP on July 18-20 as "the biggest event on the 2008 schedule," noting that the motorcycle event attracted more than 140,000 fans in 2007. The 2008 MotoGP event will include support races
from the AMA Superbike Championship and, new for this year, the Red Bull Rookies Cup.

"With the best in sports car, open wheel, motorcycling and historic racing on the 2008 schedule, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca continues its position as the premier road racing circuit in North America," said Gill Campbell, the track's CEO and general manager.

"We are proud to enter our eighth season in partnership with Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca," said Jim O'Sullivan, CEO & president, Mazda North American Operations. "We're especially pleased to see the return of the Champ Car World Series, along with the Mazda powered Atlantic cars, bringing world-class open-wheel racing back to the Monterey Peninsula."

CART/Champ Car raced at Laguna Seca from 1983 until 2004, when the event was replaced on the calendar by a street race in San Jose. That event has been removed from the Champ Car calendar for 2008, however.
