With seven-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen at the helm, the No.2 Audi R10 shared by him with Allan McNish and Dindo Capello has settled into a rhythm that, barring mechanical problems or other incidents, should secure a record-extending eighth overall win for the Dane.

The sister No.1 R10 sits three laps behind, with Emanuelle Pirro handling driving duties in the car co-driven by Frank Biela and Marco Werner. Two further laps behind comes the best of the Peugeot 908 HDI FAPs, the one of Marc Gene (currently driving), Jacques Villeneuve and Nicolas Minassian. The second Peugeot, of Sebastien Bourdais, Stephane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy, was slowed down by mechanical problems early on and lies fifth, behind the Pescarolo entry of Collard/Boiullon/Dumas.

The early leader in GT1, the Corvette of Beretta/Gavin/Papis, has retired with mechanical problems. The two factory Aston Martins now lead, with the Kox/Herbert/Enge machine ahead of Brabham/Rydell/Turner. The second works Vette of Fellows/Magnussen/O'Connell is third, one lap behind the leading Aston.
